august 2 - first call for work for the october "work in progress" exhibition
From sunday october 3 up to sunday october 24 we will run our half-yearly three-week "work in progress" exhibition. All our associated artists as well as visiting artists are invited to submit their newest work(s), to show recent developments in their art. All disciplines are welcomed: paintings, drawings, (mono)prints, photographs, mixed media, sculptures, ceramics, objets trouvés, jewellery, textiles, installations, kinematic objects, poetry, slam, multimedia, music, sound, light, videos, performance - as well as all performing arts.
You are asked to send representations of the work you want to submit (photos, CD, DVD) by email, download or snailmail before the deadline of sunday september 19 at 22:00. A selection of all work we receive will be made in the following week and will be announced on sunday 26. No discussion, no correspondence. In the following week the works can be brought in and the exhibition will be set up. On sunday october 3 from 14:00 the exhibition will be opened with a meeting session. Every artist who participates is expected to be present that day. The aim and purpose of this event is to stimulate interesting discussions and inspiring interactions between the participants. That's why your presence is all-important.
After the meeting session a joint dinner will be held at deKunstClub.nl on the "American party"-method. Everybody brings something to eat and/or drink (preferably cold) and everything is shared. After-dinner exchanges of views are strongly encouraged.
Performers are invited to present their newest work during the meeting and/or dinner on october 3. Our small theatre stage will be available but of course all exhibition spaces can also be used.

august 2 - new temporary installation-cum-performance "books against war"

Books collect and preserve the wisdom people have slowly accumulated over the years. Or so it should be. By studying books, we should be able to improve our world. Or so it could be. In totalitarian regimes, free access to books and the knowledge and ideas they hold is made difficult or impossible. Barbaric.
As such, books represent a kind of barrier to the worst species of mankind. A sort of (narrow) defence line between us and the ultimate chaos of war and society.
In this installation-cum-performance we have expanded this imagery just a bit further. Consider. Books can only be useful in averting human inhumanity when they are taken from their bookshelves and read and studied. But who reads them? So we were looking for a more direct use of books in this field.
In a 41-minute performance, some 1,000 books were used to build a strong semi-circular wall, forming a bastion behind which one could hide to be safe from any attacks, free from war even. However, just in case, some embrasures were left open. Behind the bastion you'll notice the empty bookshelves.
It must be noted that bookwalls like these look stronger than they actually are. In this particular case, part of the wall tends to gradually slide outwards. If this effect perseveres, the wall is bound to collapse at some future date. Its condition is now monitored daily ....

august 1 - activities in deKunstClub.nl during august
During august we will not organize events specifically meant for the general public. So no concerts, no performances, no exhibitions. During this holiday month we cannot expect too many visitors nor much public interest in the things we do (ehh, art).
Nevertheless - and of course - we keep deKunstClub.nl fully open for visitors, for our associated artists and for visiting artists. There will still be much to observe, to do and to enjoy. Those of us that are not holidaying elsewhere are daily working on really exciting new stuff.
Everybody is cordially invited to come and possibly join us. Yes, you are welcome to take part in the work, or to have a good look around, or to have an in-depth talk with (one of) the artists about the things we do and the way we do them. If an artist prefers to work here on his or her own project - excellent, we love to see him or her working here! Our facilities can freely be used; our catering is renowned. And free of charge.
Interested? Just pay us a visit. Remember - we're there from 10:00 to 22:00 every day, seven days a week.

july 31 - new temporary installation "rain - no brain"

We see the body of a man lying stretched out on a narrow bed, apparently deep in sleep. If you approach him from the top of the bed, however, it becomes evident that the head is missing. Over the silent body many (rather antique) handtools are dangling from the ceiling in a positively threatening manner. The light is spooky. The toolstorm could begin any moment, raining the tools on this poor defenceless brainless person .... tools such as chisels, hammers, saws, nearly as deadly dangerous as Damocles' sword.
An interesting although unenvisaged effect observed in this installation is the beautiful ringing tone many of the tools produce when they are swung on their long strings and strike each other in a random fashion.

july 31 - website of deKunstClub.nl completely renewed
For some time now we've been working on a renewed - redesigned - overhauled version of this website. You are now seeing the first results. The earlier edition of our website was becoming a trifle difficult to maintain. Also, navigation was no longer totally transparant. We have archived all the pages of the earlier edition of this website and these pages are easily accessible via the links in the top righthand corner of this page. Nothing has been lost.
A further rather significant change is that we will continue in English, instead of Dutch. We get more and more visitors from outside the Netherlands and they asked for an English version. Well - here it is!
